Hex is a contemporary tale of survival told as an observation of place. The choreography of cars is central to the film’s rhythmic composition. It is a visual incantation; a naturalistic portrait of a hybrid American experience unfolding as a continuous space. The story of twentieth-century American migration, as told in John Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath, correlates with the contemporary reality of an otherwise unremarkable American town transformed into a beacon of short-term prosperity through the hi-tech extraction of oil. The temporary encampments outside the petroleum plant symbolize an unapologetic wish for a new beginning. Just as the little farmhouse that stands against the apocalyptic Kansas winds and the thunder of the cars punctuate a game of survival. This is the haunted tableau in which Hex resides. These scenarios function together as an open system, like expanded photographs and oblique records of a place and time.

MEN AMONG MEN is a short comedy about a group of prospectors in gold rush California wrestling with ideas about masculinity. Part consciousness raising group, part fight club, these cowboys are determined to figure out how they can be good men. Written by a woman for eight men to perform, this film shows the Old West as it might have been.
